Knowing what to eat
and what not to eat can
be tricky, but did you
know that you must also
give thought to how you
eat when dieting?
Although many are
unaware, one of the
biggest problems dieters
have is with binge
eating. Not only is
binge eating unhealthy,
but it can also make you
gain weight and put you
at risk for eating
disorders, heart
disease, and many other
problems.
Binge eating is when you
starve yourself for long
periods of time—maybe
all day or longer—and
then suddenly snap and
give into temptation.
When you do, you body is
craving food so badly
that you eat much more
than you normally
should, and most of the
time you eat comfort
foods that are
unhealthy, like ice
cream, potato chips,
pasta, or chocolate.
Binge eating turns into
an even bigger problem
after you are finished,
because you feel so
overstuffed with food
that you are tempted to
do things like watch
television or nap
instead of exercise.
How can you prevent
binge eating? The key is
to plan your meals in
advance and stick to a
consistent schedule
whenever possible. Talk
to your doctor to plan
this out, but in most
cases, you’ll want to
prepare three hearty
meals every day and
leave room for healthy
snacking between these
meals. That’s
right—snacking can be
good for you!
Preparing meals in
advance is a huge step.
If you aren’t a morning
person, get ready for
breakfast and lunch the
night before! Make sure
that you have a healthy
lunch packed, along with
some healthy snacks for
throughout the day.
Fresh veggies are a very
good pick. As for
breakfast, don’t be
tempted to skip it. Some
people are not very
hungry at the start of
the day. If this is the
case, you don’t have to
eat a lot, just make
choices like whole grain
bagels with peanut
butter. This will give
you a punch of
carbohydrates and
proteins to give you
energy for the day.
If you are a morning
person but full tired
and sleepy after work,
you can prepare things
in the morning instead.
Purchasing a slow-cooker
can be a lifesaver—you
can throw some veggies
and meat into the
slow-cooker, turn it on
low, and come home to a
simmering stew. You’ll
be amazed at how easy
and delicious these
meals can be.
Remember, three meals
every day are much
better than binge
eating. Snacks and
healthy meals can
prevent binge eating
from ever becoming a
problem in your life.
Binge eating does not
lead to weight loss in
the end—the only way to
lose weight is through a
healthy diet and
exercise.
