“Eat your fruits and veggies; they will help you grow.” “Eat your fruits and veggies; they will keep you healthy.” We have all heard these, or saying like these all of our lives. Whether we heard them at home or at school or both, they are ingrained into our brains forever, and when we have children we will tell them the same things. This is a good thing to do, because those sayings are true. Fruits and vegetables have vitamins, minerals, fibre and more inside of them, and our bodies need these things to live and keep healthy. Eating fruits and vegetables is a good and necessary part of every day. However, we need to watch how we are eating them and how often we are eating them.

We are all supposed to have at least five to ten servings of fruits and veggies per day. Although this sounds like a lot, it really isn’t. A serving is only a medium sized apple, carrot or banana. Five to ten of those are really not too hard to consume in one day. Try pre-cutting them and storing them in small bags. That way, when you feel like a snack, instead of reaching for chips or cookies, have a serving or two of fruit or vegetables. Another way to help eat the recommended amount is to bring some fruit and veggies to work so you can snack on them throughout the day.

One of the things that we can do to our vegetables that is not good for you is overcooking them. When you do this, you are robbing yourself of all the good things that veggies have to offer your body. Overcooking your veggies also wastes your money. There is no point in buying vegetables if they do nothing for your health! Eating your vegetables raw sometimes is a good idea. Raw veggies contain more of the good stuff than cooked veggies do. Even if you cook your vegetables the right way, they still don’t have as much value for your body as the raw ones do.

A lot of people don’t eat enough vegetables because they don’t want to take the time to prepare them before a meal or snack time. One way to eliminate this trouble is to pre-cut your veggies. Take a little time each week to plan your vegetable consumption, and cut them up as needed. That way, when you feel like a snack, or are preparing a meal, you can just reach into the fridge and pull out whatever vegetables you want, already pre-prepared.

A couple of ways to make sure you get your recommended amounts of fruits and veggies everyday, is to put fruit in your morning bowl of cereal. This tastes great, and it will get you off to a good start. You can also have a small salad with your meals. Salads are light and will satisfy your hunger so you won’t fill up on carbohydrates. Another way to increase your fruit and veggie servings is to drink juice. Fruit juice taste good and gives you more than one serving. Also, consider purchasing a juicer and making veggie juice. Many people think that this idea is a gross one, but if you put a whole bunch of vegetables through that juicer and then one or two pieces of fruit, the taste of the fruit will overcome the taste of the veggies. Try it and see for yourself. Eat your fruits and vegetables. Your body will thank you for it.
