Articles Index | How
To Avoid Becoming A
Fitness Failure
One of the hardest
things in life is to set
up an exercise
program and then
fail. Starting an
exercise program to
begin with is difficult
because you have one
extra thing to do in
your daily life, but
then failing at it can
make you miserable and
damage your self-esteem.
Failing once or even
numerous times can set
one up for permanent
failure as they may feel
that they cannot
maintain an exercise
program ever.
Most gym memberships are
purchased in the month
of January as people
make New Year’s
resolutions to get in
shape and lose the
extra weight.
Problems arise however
when the resolution has
worn off and long days
at work set in. Some
people claim to be too
tired to workout, when
the truth is a workout
actually improves your
stamina and will make
you feel more energetic.
Also, by keeping a
regular workout schedule
one will experience
lower stress levels and
obviously better health.
In order to avoid
failure, one must set a
goal. This goal should
not be something crazy
like losing 25 pounds in
a month or running a
10K. Do your homework
and find out what is an
acceptable and
attainable goal.
Goals are important in
weight loss because
your results may not
always be obvious right
away. Sometimes it takes
a little while to see
your progress. If you
set a goal such as
running three miles,
then you will be able to
view your progress by
how winded you become
and how far you can run
without walking. Other
ways to gauge your
progress is how much
weight you can lift or
what level you can
workout at.
Once you have set a
goal, remember to keep
track of it. Keeping
track of a goal will
help you see progression
and in turn keep you
returning to the gym.
Keeping track of a goal
should be done
carefully. Do not become
over confident because
you are making progress
and decide to up your
goal. Also, weighing
everyday can be a way to
crush your exercise
program. Weight can
fluctuate based on a
number of things like
water retention and
hormones. Pick one day a
week to weigh and only
weigh on that day.
Next change up your
exercise regime by
not doing the same
exercises everyday. If
you can rotate your
exercises around, you
will avoid the
inevitable boredom.
Also, your body will get
used to the same
exercises and will stop
responding to your
exercises. To avoid
this, change your
exercises around,
add extra weight, or add
sprints to your jogs.
This will allow your
body the chance to show
continued progress
through more toned
muscles.
Last but not least, find
a gym buddy. A gym buddy
is a friend with whom
you can workout with,
share your successes and
failures with, and with
whom you feel
accountable to for
attending the gym. A gym
buddy will help you keep
a positive attitude by
reminding you of your
progress and not allow
you to come up with
those lame excuses for
missing a workout.
