The South Beach
Diet. The name makes
it almost sound
glamorous, doesn’t it?
(Well, except for the
“diet” part anyway!)
Also, coming from
Florida only makes the
glamour a bit more real.
However, this diet is
probably one of the
hardest and oddest
programs on the market
today. With its firm
restrictions and
selective eating habits,
very few people may
actually be able to
achieve success with the
South Beach Diet.
This program does have
its good qualities
though. Some people
absolutely swear by it,
and will never hear a
word against it. One of
the good things this
diet has going for it is
that it focuses on
eliminating simple
carbohydrates such as
baked goods, pasta and
bread (all of the good
stuff) and replacing
them with the more
healthy complex
carbohydrates like whole
grains and vegetables.
This is an excellent
eating habit to get
into, and if more people
did this, obesity would
not be such a problem.
Even with this diet’s
disciples and good
qualities, the downside
may just outweigh the
upside. While cutting
back on the “bad” carbs,
dieters are expected to
restrict themselves to
lean meat, protein, low
fat dairy products and
worst of all, artificial
sweeteners. While still
in the first phase of
the South Beach Diet
you are actually not
supposed to be eating
most fruits and
vegetables either! This
can result in weakness,
fatigue, nausea and a
much lower energy level,
and many people find it
hard to cope with these
difficulties and quit
the diet. However, as
serious as these
symptoms may sound, they
do not affect everyone.
It usually depends on
your genetic make-up.
The second phase of this
diet is much better than
the first. It actually
imparts a sensible
eating practice that is
meant to be used for the
rest of the dieters’
life. The program
provides great recipes
and good, healthy eating
advice. Also, this diet
has a pre-packaged food
option for those who
don’t have the time or
the desire to cook. When
all is said and done,
the South Beach Diet
actually provides the
information needed to
stay healthy and fat
free for the rest of
your lifetime.
As with many diets, this
one has naturally been
seen as a fad diet that
will die away at some
point in the future.
This is partially
because of the marketing
of the program, which
has promoted its ability
to help you “lose the
weight fast!” People
have a tendency to
disbelieve anything that
sounds too good to be
true probably is, and
judge accordingly. Also,
losing weight too
quickly is too good to
be true! It usually
results in the dieter
losing more water than
fat. The South Beach
Diet is one of the
good ones, if the dieter
can look past all of the
hype in the marketing
and focus on the good
points of the program.
