Dieting is not
something that comes
naturally to many
people, since our
society emphasizes quick
and easy meals that are
loaded with saturated
fats, sugars,
preservatives, and other
bad things for our
bodies. There are a
number of places
where diets go wrong,
so if you have not had
success dieting in the
past, don’t give up.
There is a diet out
there for you! Once you
find the perfect diet,
you’ll find that losing
weight comes easily with
little effort and you’ll
feel healthier overall.
One place where diets
go wrong is in
portion control. You’ll
read in almost every
dieting and health
magazine that
controlling the size of
your meals is important
if you want to lose
weight. This may be
true, but many believe
that this means starving
your body. Skipping
meals or otherwise not
eating enough to satisfy
your hunger is actually
very bad for your body
and also extremely
unhealthy. Instead,
learn what portion sizes
are appropriate and
stick to those
guidelines. However,
eating less is only a
small way to help your
body stay healthy.
Eating the right foods
is much more important.
The biggest difference
between those who are
overweight and those who
are thin is not how much
is eaten, but rather
what is eaten. Instead
of choosing a food high
in saturated fat, look
for choices with complex
carbohydrates and
proteins. Consider your
eating pattern and
instead of cutting back
on what you eat, replace
foods that are hurting
your diet with healthier
choices.
Another place where
diets go wrong is in
timing. Many people will
give up on a diet after
only a few weeks because
they see little results.
Take a moment, however,
to consider how many
years you have been
eating poorly. It took a
long time for your body
to store all of that
fat, so it will take a
long time to lose it as
well. Diet gimmicks
can’t help you here—the
only way to lose weight
is to work hard at it.
Of course, you must
remember that exercising
is important too. Only
focusing on your diet is
a place where diets
go wrong for many
people. Without
exercise, even the
healthy foods you eat
will not be needed for
your body’s energy and
will thus be stored as
fat. Try to exercise at
least five times a
week—and good news: you
don’t have to exercise
for hours to see
results! A half-hour
session in the morning
or after work (or even
split up during the day)
will do wonders. Pairing
that with healthy foods
is the key to a weight
loss plan that is
healthy for your body
and will get you the
results you want.
